I grew up inspired by nature. Studying science heightened my awareness and increased my desire to speak up. Once my dad and I drove through a vineyard he manages, and I asked him about the noticeable erosion. This conversation began a sort of friendly competition to see who could discover the most ecological practices. I found ladybugs, he found owl boxes. Now he integrates these approaches into his viticulture. I learned about sacrifice from my grandmother who was pregnant when she emigrated from Mexico. Our family thrives today because of her dedication. As someone who’s survived cancer and is just starting college, I see possibilities stretch before me. I awake to the sun, run in the mountains, and feel transfixed by the moment. I study Walt Whitman and wonder about my place in the world. |
